Group Four-Untitled
Are you shitting me? Pavement? She’s dancing like that to Pavement? That’s gotta be like trying to build a treehouse with Morrissey sulking in the background. I mean, maybe it’s just me, but lyrics like “Well focus on the quasar in the mist / the Kaiser has a cyst” don’t seem to evoke movement, let alone uncontrolled gyration. Get a grip, lady. No wait, I take that back. She just grabbed somebody’s beer off the stage and emptied its contents straight into her throat. That makes four adult beverages in the ten minutes she’s been bothering me. I’m not a betting man, but if I weren’t me, I’d say that her liver will probably disintegrate around the time Cursive takes the stage. That gives her two opening acts to live. It’s not her, it’s the alcohol.

I really enjoyed this piece and it made me laugh pretty hard. The frank language of the anecdotal sections works very well. The informality of the writing helps make the reader understand what it's like at the concert. One or two references went over my head but I guess that's my fault. The expository sections were very informative without being boring. They provided a succinct but useful summary of the rise and fall of Emo.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I kept wishing for during the story parts of this piece was more tactile and olfactory description. It helps to use some specific modifiers of smells and feelings and textures to set the scene.
I'm not entirely sure what "impressively inane" is supposed to mean. Can one really be impressed by the magnitude of another's inanity? I dunno.
Lastly, I begin to raise my eyebrows at the lyrics you included. They're nice, and a few of them seem to relate to the piece, but the rest seem to just be floating there. I get that you're probably just trying to present examples of a new breed of lyrics, I just feel like they should all somehow relate to the rest of the piece.
By and large, though, this was a great piece. I love the descriptions of the other concertgoers and the opening acts.
